Fernie, British Columbia welcomes old man winter with a contest!

While we applaud the Occupy movements, between work and family this holiday season, the only thing we want to occupy in January is a vacation. A ski vacation - especially a free one - in the Canadian Rockies would be perfect. Right?

Main Street, Fernie, BCMain Street, Fernie, BCFernie, British Columbia epitomizes a Rocky Mountain town - picturesque, quaint and beautiful in a quiet mining-town-kind-of-way. Summers drench the valley in lush greenness but winters are measured in inches ... of snowfall.  There's no such thing as too much of the white stuff.

Fair weather skiers, pay attention

A Skiers ParadiseA Skiers ParadiseMile high cliffs that empty into linked bowls mark Fernie a place for serious skiers. We love that intermediates can safely traverse the entire resort and every lift at Fernie accesses an intermediate trail at some point. As in most resorts, level of skills needed advance as you move up the mountain.

With more 12,000 acres of ski terrain stretched across three ski areas, take your pick of descents:  cruisers and cliffs, steep and deep or chutes and trees. Fernie Alpine Resort, Island Lake Catskiing and FWA Powder Catskiing have turned Fernie into one of the most sought after ski locations in the world (there's even talk of another ski resort in Fernie...).

Enter the ski contest

Vacation with friendsVacation with friendsIn celebration of the 50th anniversary of skiing at Fernie Alpine Resort and the 25th season of catskiing at FWA Powder Catskiing, a contest has been launched that will provide the dream ski or snowboard vacation to a winner and his or her guest.

Whether you're on the hunt for an active getaway with the family or a girl's weekend filled with fun days and wine-induced evenings, Fernie is offering you a chance at it for free. The good news is that no special skills are required to enter and occupy the winning ticket. Tents also not needed.

Contest prize package includes for two people:

  • Juniper Lodge, Fernie, BCJuniper Lodge, Fernie, BC 5 nights' accommodation with Fernie Lodging Company, on-mountain at Fernie Alpine Resort
  • 1 day Catskiing with Fernie Wilderness Adventures Powder Catskiing
  • 3 days skiing at Fernie Alpine Resort
  • $200 gift certificate towards a Tourism Fernie member of your choice
  • Return shuttle from the Canadian Rockies International Airport* (if applicable)

To enter visit www.tourismfernie.com/contest. Deadline for entries is December 31, 2011. The winning ticket will be announced on January 3rd. The only requirement to enter, other than being at least 19 years of age is you should be of intermediate skiing or snowboarding ability. Or plan to spend the vacation in the chalet - which is a fairly decent second prize if you ask us.

Beanpod chocolate tapBeanpod chocolate tapIf you opt to park yourself instead of skiing, check out Beanpod Chocolate. They make chocolate from pods shipped from Ecuador and if the reviews on Yelp are correct, prepare for a chocolate coma from their chocolate 'tap'.

  • On Booking CHEAP Airline Travel, Rebecca said "Re: "one way flights booked singly are usually cheaper and have more options than a round-trip package" I have never found this to be true in the States. In fact, just a couple of years ago, I paid for a round trip flight on United even though I knew that the return would never be used because it was so much cheaper than booking a one way flight. It's possible that airlines have begun changing policies recently without my noticing, I haven't been flying nearly as much these days. But I can say that it has been the accepted wisdom for decades that round trip tickets are significantly cheaper than two one way tickets."

  • On Bed Bugs While Traveling ~ 5 Tips to Help You Avoid Them!, Travel Protection said "This is disgusting!!!! I would not ask for another room if I find bedbugs; it's time for a refund! The hotel staff should use thorough cleaning techniques after a person checks out. I have kids and if they get bit, so help me God!"

  • On My Cancun Love Affair , Darleen said "Great post and yes Cancun beaches are beautiful. I was there many long years ago. I avoid due to liking the more rugged and less built up areas - but with your post I may return. We love vacationing in Mexico - Cozumel and from there went to the mainland and toured. Lastest best place is Huatulco - hot and guaranteed no rain in February when we travel the most. It does appear to be slightly more expensive than we can find, but it is m ore luxurious. For a special trip it may be just the ticket! "

  • On How to Survive an Earthquake, Anna Lopez said "These are all very good tips. However nothing can really prepare you for the first time. I happened to be in Tokyo during the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and I had heard before of going under the desk and protecting yourself. But in reality that moment was so shocking and unexpected that it was hard to act in any way, except to just wait for the earthquake to stop. Nevertheless it's good to know these things if you have a chance or the courage to act!"

  • On Julia’s Favorite Restaurant in Waterloo Region…, Julia Rosien said "Thanks for the comment, Anonymous - I'd feel a lot more comfortable chatting with you if I knew who you were :-) The question is fair but I would prefer not to go into detail. I will say that it was a mistake that should not have happened. But, we are all human and humans make mistakes - even ones that shouldn't happen. How I was treated after the mistake - both at the restaurant and on the phone the next day - more than made up for the error. Had they not admitted right away that it was an inexcusable error and tried to cover up, my feelings would be much different. Sometimes the best test of any product or service is when things go wrong - I want to know there's someone at the company listening to my needs. Charcoal answered the call with kindness and generosity. For the record, the compensation was lovely but it was the staff and how they treated the situation that won me over. Julia"
