Lose your return ticket - on purpose

If you thought escaping to the islands is the only way to spoil yourself silly, you've never visited a W Hotel. Forget what you know about hotels (and their one-perk wonders) and introduce yourself to fashionable travel.

Putting the "WOW" back into hotel stays

Rooftop Patio ~ W Hotel, San FranciscoRooftop Patio ~ W Hotel, San FranciscoStaying at a W Hotel can feel a little like stepping onto a Hollywood set. High style restaurants, cutting edge design and signature spas add up to distinctly glamorous flavor. With locations in all major North American cities as well as across the globe - Athens, Milan, Paris, St. Petersburg (to name just a few) - the W Hotel chain is the juggernaut of hotel glitz.

I stayed at the W Hotel in San Francisco with a fellowBliss Spa, W Hotel, San FranciscoBliss Spa, W Hotel, San Francisco editor and visited both their signature spa and restaurant while visiting. While I loved the innovative design of the space, it was the little details that let me know this hotel understood travelers - especially female travelers.

6 things I love about W Hotel San Fran

Many of the W Hotels lean towards the flamboyant, but San Fran's is upscale and chic without being pretentious.

  • The goody basket in our room was filled with lots of girly stuff - eye masks, moisturizing socks, a CD of relaxing music, sugar-free breath mints and loads of toiletries.
  • The lobby isn't your average lobby - in fact it's called a living room. Complete with comfy chairs and coffee tables and lots of outlets so you can power up while snuggling up.
  • What's more it's walking distance from Union Square, the Financial District and the Waterfront. From my experience, Californians are directionally challenged so pack your android phone.
  • The Bliss Spa - the name pretty much says it all. I enjoyed the triple oxygen facial, which did a good job of undoing some of the damaging behaviour I'd been indulging in on my trip.
  • The rooftop patio. I have a thing for rooftop patios, and the view from here is divine.
  • When it comes to planet protection, the San Fran location is LEED Certified Silver so you can feel good about staying here.

  • On Booking CHEAP Airline Travel, Rebecca said "Re: "one way flights booked singly are usually cheaper and have more options than a round-trip package" I have never found this to be true in the States. In fact, just a couple of years ago, I paid for a round trip flight on United even though I knew that the return would never be used because it was so much cheaper than booking a one way flight. It's possible that airlines have begun changing policies recently without my noticing, I haven't been flying nearly as much these days. But I can say that it has been the accepted wisdom for decades that round trip tickets are significantly cheaper than two one way tickets."

  • On Bed Bugs While Traveling ~ 5 Tips to Help You Avoid Them!, Travel Protection said "This is disgusting!!!! I would not ask for another room if I find bedbugs; it's time for a refund! The hotel staff should use thorough cleaning techniques after a person checks out. I have kids and if they get bit, so help me God!"

  • On My Cancun Love Affair , Darleen said "Great post and yes Cancun beaches are beautiful. I was there many long years ago. I avoid due to liking the more rugged and less built up areas - but with your post I may return. We love vacationing in Mexico - Cozumel and from there went to the mainland and toured. Lastest best place is Huatulco - hot and guaranteed no rain in February when we travel the most. It does appear to be slightly more expensive than we can find, but it is m ore luxurious. For a special trip it may be just the ticket! "

  • On How to Survive an Earthquake, Anna Lopez said "These are all very good tips. However nothing can really prepare you for the first time. I happened to be in Tokyo during the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and I had heard before of going under the desk and protecting yourself. But in reality that moment was so shocking and unexpected that it was hard to act in any way, except to just wait for the earthquake to stop. Nevertheless it's good to know these things if you have a chance or the courage to act!"
