More of what we want, less of what we don’t…
It’s the beginning of a new year – a time for coming clear on what you want more of and what you want less. If you’re reading this blog, it’s likely you want more travel and adventure, and less of the ‘same old’. You’re not alone. More and more, women are turning to travel to shift their intentions into action. Just by leaving your four walls, your appointments and everyday routine, you’re taking the first step toward experiencing positive personal change.
For minor life tune-ups, a destination a few hours away by car usually does the trick. But, when you’re truly looking to reboot, renew and revitalize, a destination further away, to a place less familiar, is where transformation occurs. The best destinations are somewhat exotic, require a passport and are unfamiliar enough that your everyday life isn’t tapping you on the shoulder. Travelling to such a destination will give you the distance and freedom to explore the question, “What’s next?”
Isla Mujeres, freedom, exploration, transformation
For the past few years, my ‘destiny destination’ has been Isla Mujeres, The Island of Women, Mexico. As a destination, Isla checks all of my must-have boxes.
- I can get there easily. From most major airports there are a number of flights daily to Cancun and the airport is only 15 minutes from the ferry to ‘Isla’.
- Isla is a very safe and comfortable place for women travelers – I’ve never had as much as an uncomfortable conversation let alone a problem.
It’s beautiful, surrounded on all sides by the turquoise Caribbean ocean. The sea breezes, the white sandy beaches, and the stunning sunsets make it easy for your mind to calm and wander. Walking down “Hildago” – the pedestrian street in the middle of town – quickly becomes a pastime, a people-watching mecca and a food extravaganza.
Isla has something else too – a magical quality that is best summed up as ‘spiritual”. It may be because Isla has a Mayan temple at the sound end for the Goddess Ix Chel, the Goddess of Women, Healing and Abundance, or it may just be the laid-back vibe that makes it the perfect soul vacation.
A journey back to myself at Isla Mujeres
Once a year, there’s a 3 day women’s retreat on Isla, called “We Move Forward.” If you’re looking for an engaging retreat that will replenish your body, mind and soul – this is an experience you shouldn’t miss. For three days, you’re immersed in inspirational talks by speakers from around the world, and take part in group discussions, movement sessions, and fun seaside socials that provide much laughter and ah-yes moments. The setting – at the north tip of Isla – demands attention. I’ve found myself listening to the waves, watching the tide slide out, and feeling present and coming clear on my desired future.
This year, again, I find myself on Isla at the turn of the year, looking forward and setting out resolutions for 2014. As far as destiny destinations, Isla Mujeres has it all.
